July is National Grilling Month! It’s a fun and convenient way to prepare a meal. Be sure to explore all the foods you can grill. Here are a few suggestions.
- Lean meats are a great choice for protein. Beef cuts that have the word “loin” or “round” in the name are usually a good indicator of a lean cut. For example, beef Sirloin Steak, Strip Loin Steak or Top Round Steak are great choices. Use an instant read thermometer to determine internal doneness. Cook steaks and roasts to an internal temperature of 145°F. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F.
- Fresh vegetables are easy to grill and make a delicious side. Baste fresh vegetables with olive oil and season with herbs prior to grilling. Vegetable kabobs are a great suggestion for the grill as well. Mushrooms, asparagus, onions, peppers, zucchini and corn on the cob are just a few ideas.
- Grilled fruit is a wonderful way to prepare a sweet yet nutritious dessert. Pineapple, peach or plum halves and watermelon work well for grilling. Preheat the grill to low heat. Slice the fruit and place on the grill and cook until the fruit is hot and slightly grilled. For an extra treat serve with a little ice cream or whipped cream.
