Simple Steak Month Tips
June is Steak Month and it’s a great time to get out and grill your favorite cut of beef this summer! Grilling a steak may be intimidating for some, but once you learn a few easy tips, you will feel confident to prepare and enjoy that great steak eating experience.
Here are a few helpful tips to consider when grilling steaks:
Choose your steak! Top Sirloin Steak, Strip Steak, T-Bone Steak and Ribeye Steaks are all popular cuts that are tender and great options to grill.
Remember when shopping, select beef with a bright cherry-red color. Beef in a sealed bag typically has a darker purplish-red color. When exposed to the air, it will turn bright red.
Pull your steaks from your refrigerator just prior to grilling. Season with salt and pepper or your favorite steak seasoning.
Prepare the grill by making sure the grates are clean to help prevent flair-ups. Next, preheat the grill to medium heat (350 ͦF). If you are using a charcoal grill, medium heat is determined when the coals are ash-covered (approximately 30 minutes). To help determine temperature, spread coals in a single layer and cautiously hold the palm of your hand above the coals at cooking height. Count the seconds you can hold it there before the heat forces you to pull it away. Four seconds is approximately medium temperature.
Next, place the steak on the preheated grill and cook to desired temperature. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to ensure desired doneness. Insert the thermometer through the side of the thickest part of the steak to get an accurate temperature. We recommend 145 ͦF for medium rare or 160 ͦF for medium.
Lastly, remove the steak from the grill about 5 degrees prior to desired doneness and let it rest for about 5 minutes. The internal temperature of the steak will continue to rise a few degrees while it rests and it will also let the juices within the steak redistribute.
Pair the steak with a nutritious side such as whole-grains, vegetables or fruit for a well-balanced and delicious meal!
